Dharma of Trees is a focus-affiliate of Zen Peacemakers International
and part of the Mahasangha of Upaya Zen Center.
It emerges from three interconnected programmes: the Buddhist Eco-Chaplaincy training at the Sati Center for Buddhist Studies in California, USA; the Socially Engaged Buddhist training at the Upaya Zen Institute in New Mexico, USA; and third, the MOOC, De-Mystifying Mindfulness, which involves Leiden University in The Netherlands and MentalPraxis.com in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada.
Dharma of Trees works in partnership with the Eininji in Brazil, supporting our global forest sangha.
Dharma of Trees freely offers in-person services to individuals, families, and communities on Vancouver Island, BC, and it is available for virtual consultations (by Zoom) anywhere in the world.

meet our eco-chaplain
Dr. Chris Goto-Jones is a Buddhist Eco-Chaplain working in the field of EcoDharma on Vancouver Island, Canada, where he is also a certified Nature & Forest Therapy Guide (ANFT). His training in Buddhism is in the Zen, Shingon, and Vipassana traditions; he carries the dharma name Shinsen and in 2022 received the name Shunmyō from Rōshi Joan Jiko Halifax. He has taught meditation internationally for nearly a decade, including through the massive open online course (MOOC), De-Mystifying Mindfulness (Leiden University & Coursera/FutureLearn, 2016-present), which has served 250,000 participants to date. Chris has advanced certifications in MBSR and MBCT. He is a certified Philosophical Counsellor, a diplomate counsellor in Existential Analysis & Logotherapy, and a registered Counselling Hypnotherapist. He is currently a professor in Philosophy at the University of Victoria.
With humility and gratitude, Chris acknowledges and respects the Lekwungen peoples on whose traditional territory he lives, learns, and works, as well as the Songhees, Esquimalt, and WSÁNEĆ peoples whose vital relationships with the land live to this day.
