- special projects of Dharma of trees -
In addition to its regular services, Dharma of Trees runs a number of special projects, which are made possible through specific donations, gifts, and grants. We are deeply grateful to all of the donors who have made projects like these possible.
Bearing witness retreatsSupported by a generous donation from the Bess Family Foundation, Dharma of Trees is conducting a 12-month project to develop a 'bearing witness' container - in the tradition of Rōshi Bernie Glassman and the Order of Zen Peacemakers - to bear witness to areas of the natural world afflicted by disaster, trauma, and destruction. |
Eco-Dharma courseSupported by a generous donation from the Bess Family Foundation, our very own Dr. Chris Goto-Jones is able to offer an upper-level undergraduate course in the Philosophy of Eco-Dharma at the University of Victoria, BC. A small number of committed students will take this course with full scholarships. |
other-than-human chaplaincySupported by a number of dedicated donations, Dharma of Trees is able to conduct a project to explore the meaning and practice of chaplaincy for the other-than-human realm, including (but not limited to) animal chaplaincy.

Dōgen and the other-than-humanTo support the various projects underway, Dharma of Trees is able to offer a reading group dedicated to exploration of the place of the natural world in the thought of the founder of Sōtō Zen in Japan, Eihei Dōgen (1200-1253).

other projects and publications
Previous projects of the Dharma of Trees have resulted in publications in academic and non-academic fora. One popular piece, which was published by the Center for Humans & Nature in Illinois, was an attempt to answer the question, 'what are the lessons of loss?' with particular reference to eco-chaplaincy. The result was a short essay by Chris Goto-Jones: The Seagull Sutta - on not turning away from other-than-human loss. You can read it here.
